Foster Dam

The Foster Dam was officially opened by the Honourable Patrick McNamara, Deputy Premier & Minister for Agriculture & Resources on the 26th February 1997.

The Foster Dam was constructed to increase the amount of water available to customers in the Foster Township, and is an integral part of South Gippsland Water's Drought Management Strategy for the area. The Foster Dam supplements the existing reservoir at Deep Creek to provide a reliable supply of water at all times.

The Foster Dam was constructed by a local contractor Geoff Goldsmith of Dumbalk for the South Gippsland Region Water Authority. South Gippsland Water is responsible for operating and maintaining the facilities of the Dam.

The Dam holds 242 megalitres of water and covers more than 22 hectares. The 15.1m high dam wall contains approximately 50,000 cubic metres of clay and sandstone.

The Dam is an offstream storage that is filled during winter by gravity flows from a weir on Deep Creek. During summer, when flows in Deep Creek are low, water is pumped from the Dam to towns water treatment plant.

Apart from meeting the water Supply needs of customers in Foster, the Dam will ensure that there is adequate water available to meet summertime demands as well as allowing summertime flows in Deep Creek to pass downstream.
